RefreshForce Extra FAQ
Since the previous release of RefreshForce (1.10), there have been a number of people contacting me via e-mail regarding the same 4 questions, which were not answered in the Instruct.htm file enclosed with the utility. Hopefully this will clear things up for everyone!
- Q: BattleField 1942 does not work when RefreshForce is configured.
- A: This bug occurs with all non-resident refresh fixes. It is because the default 60Hz mode which BattleField 1942 attempts to use becomes inaccessible as a result of "refresh fixing". The good news is that in versions of BF1942 above 1.1, you can use frequencies above 60Hz without having to exclude them from RefreshForce. To implement this fix, do the following:
- 1) Find your BattleField 1942 directory using Windows Explorer (find it in the Start Menu). It's most often located at C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942.
- 2) Open the Settings folder.
- 3) Open NotePad on your system (Start Menu), and drag the VideoDefault.con file from the folder into the NotePad window.
- 4) Locate the line that reads renderer.allowAllRefreshRates, and change the 0 to 1.
- 5) Click File > Save.
- 6) That will allow the game to select alternate refresh rates on NT-based machines, and ultimately, BF1942 to function correctly.
- Q: How can I uninstall RefreshForce?
- A: People have been asking me as a precaution to making changes, how to remove the settings the program makes, so here's how. The program makes NO changes until you explicitly authorize it. To reverse the settings you made, you need to open RefreshForce and go to the monitors you optimized, and click the "Restore Original Settings" button. If you want to remove the program from your system, there is no installation program for RefreshForce (it's a feature which most people love), and as such you just delete the program files from wherever you put them (unless, obviously, you ran RefreshForce straight off a CD).
- Q: My nVidia GeForce 4 is limiting me to 85Hz, or 75Hz?
- A: This is an interesting problem, so let me explain in detail.
- This does NOT always happen with everyone. The bug also will only appear if you are using the latest nVidia drivers (40.41 and above).
- If you have a GeForce 4, one of the latest nVidia drivers and this issue, you will find that even without RefreshForce running, you (using the Display Control Panel) will not be able to access frequencies RefreshForce couldn't. Therefore clearly RefreshForce itself cannot work at it's best, because the nVidia drivers are not giving out the right information. This driver glitch will harm all programs that automatically enumerate display frequencies based on standard Windows APIs.
- I personally do not have a GeForce 4 (sorry), but I have a few friends around my area that if kind enough, they'll let me use one of their computers so I can find a workaround. In the meantime, you can try forcing higher refresh rates by double-clicking the incorrect frequency in RefreshForce's table, and updating it yourself.
- Q: Why have I got SO many monitor profiles?!
- A: The main cause for this is Windows adding more (seemingly pointless) monitor information after you change either your display adapter, monitor, or drivers for either of those devices. It is nothing to do with RefreshForce at all, but nevertheless due to interest I will have a look at it. I want to be sure there's a safe way to tidy these up, and I will deal with it as soon as possible. I've been promising this for a fair time, and I will! Honest!!
I hope that's given you the answer you were looking for.
